| Description | A big, bristly, bustling, buzzing Scoliid wasp visiting a Feay's palafox (Palafoxia feayi) blossom at Jupiter Ridge Natural Area. These energetic creatures rarely hold still for photos and I usually only get their bottoms in the frame. They are solitary wasps that burrow in the ground and parasitize scarab beetle larvae. The female stings a beetle larva and lays an egg upon it. The newly hatched wasp larva then feeds upon the beetle larva. |
