Description
A pygmy grasshopper (or "grouse locust"), Paratettix cucullatus. I've seen this species several times on rocky spillways and such--it is superbly camouflaged on rocks. The pygmy grasshoppers are a strange group--they seem to be semi-aquatic--I've seen them laying eggs under water. They don't seem to have been studied a great deal, apparently because they are never of economic interest. Body length is about 10 mm--tiny compared to most orthoptera, and note that this is an adult.
