June 17, 2011. I discovered this group of six individuals while cleaning a gutter The group probably includes a foundress, or queen, and five female attendants.. Most of the cells have been capped by larvae, which are pupating in the sealed cells and which will emerge as adults. The "paper" is plant fiber mixed with saliva. The foundress, at least, will continue to tend the nest, feeding the larvae when they hatch. Visually, I think that the interplay between the legs of the five animals to the right would have pleased Escher. Canon 5D, 100mm macro lens, Canon Ring Lite.
